Dog Rescued After Being Buried Underground for 56 Hours

A dog named Flossie was rescued after being trapped underground for more than two days. The terrier had slipped down a rabbit hole near her home in Devon, England, and was stuck for 56 hours before being freed.

The ordeal began on April 25 when Flossie’s owner, Poppy Vernon, noticed her dog was missing. A TikTok video shared by Vernon shows the desperate search efforts, including digging deep holes and calling out for Flossie. Hundreds of rabbit tunnels surround their property, making the search challenging. Despite using underground cameras and a team of tracking dogs, Flossie remained missing for hours.

In a surprising turn of events, about five hours into the search, a neighbor heard a faint bark coming from behind a shrub. The search dogs were brought back and successfully located Flossie. In the rescue video, Tom Leary, dressed in a green shirt, can be seen digging into the hole with his arms extended. After chiseling away at the wall, Flossie’s head finally appears, and Leary is able to pull her out of her underground trap.

Despite being stuck in the dirt and muck for so long, Flossie had only lost some weight and was otherwise unharmed. The video of her rescue has garnered over 3.6 million views.

“We’re just glad to have her by our sides again and, yeah, give her cuddles,” Vernon told the BBC. In another TikTok, Vernon explained that she believes Flossie fell into a hole and then dug her own tunnel, effectively trapping herself underground.

“She just fully, you know, buried herself alive,” Vernon said. She added that it’s “amazing” they found her and assured that they’ll keep a closer watch on Flossie when she goes outside from now on.
