Pet Grief: When Others Don’t Understand

 

Losing a beloved animal companion can leave you feeling as if a part of you is missing. The bond you shared was unique and profound, and it can be challenging to find others who truly understand your grief. Unfortunately, even those closest to you might say unintentionally hurtful things.

Comments like “It was just a pet” or “Get another one” may be meant to help you, but they often reveal a lack of understanding about the depth of your attachment. Your pet was more than “just a pet.” They were a constant presence through various stages of your life and often your greatest source of support. For many, a pet is a best friend, someone they would choose to spend time with over most people.

The loss of a pet can feel like a loss of identity for those who strongly identify with their animals. Hearing advice to “get another one” can be especially painful when your heart is still broken. While you might consider this idea someday when you’ve healed, being rushed to replace your irreplaceable friend is not helpful.

When people express surprise that you’re still grieving, saying something like, “I have lost a member of my family. I don’t expect you to understand, but I do expect you to respect my feelings,” can help set boundaries. It’s important not to let anyone rush you through your grief, just as you wouldn’t rush through mourning a significant person in your life. Allow yourself to experience all the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression, and acceptance.

If you find yourself stuck in depression, seek support from a professional counselor who understands pet grief. It’s essential to recognize that you have the right and the need to grieve. This was a significant loss, and you need time to process it.

Creating a meaningful way to mourn can be helpful. Consider having a ceremony to say goodbye and making a memorial for your pet. A scrapbook or a decorative box with keepsakes like tags, a collar, or a favorite toy can be comforting. During difficult moments, remember how your pet comforted you. Think about what they would want you to feel now. Understand that your friend lives on in your heart, internalized, and that their love remains with you always.
