NYC Woman Defies Subway Rules by Cleverly Carrying 52-Pound Samoyed in a Backpack

In a delightful twist on New York City’s subway rules, Jackie Hornung has gone viral for finding a creative way to bring her 52-pound Samoyed, Lumi, on the train. Her innovative approach has captured the hearts of many, with one of her TikTok videos amassing an impressive 1.4 million views.

The New York City native quickly became a sensation on social media for her clever workaround to the subway’s strict regulations. According to the rules, all dogs must be enclosed in a bag while on the subway. So, Hornung ingeniously carries her sizable Samoyed in a large hiking backpack, much to the amusement and admiration of her followers.

In one viral video posted on her TikTok account, @littlebearlumi, Hornung can be seen entering the subway station with Lumi comfortably perched in a green hiking backpack. With his paws resting on her shoulders and his fluffy head poking out, Lumi seems to enjoy the ride as much as the viewers do. Another clip shows Hornung balancing herself on the train, holding onto a chair while Lumi sits calmly on her back.

Lumi, who is between 1 and 1/2 years old and stands around two feet tall, is perfectly content with his unusual mode of transportation. Hornung explained to *Newsweek* that despite his size, Lumi is surprisingly light at around 55 pounds. She assured curious commenters that her backpack is spacious enough for Lumi to sit comfortably without his legs being squished.

New York law states that animals on public transportation must be enclosed in a container that doesn’t inconvenience other passengers. While service animals are exempt from this rule, everyday dog owners like Hornung have to get creative. Some have even resorted to using IKEA bags with holes cut out for their dogs’ legs or carrying them in oversized handbags and gym bags.

Despite the unconventional commute, Lumi seems to thoroughly enjoy his adventures around New York City. His Instagram page showcases his visits to iconic landmarks like Grand Central Station, Central Park, and Rockefeller Center, where he continues to charm everyone he meets.

Jackie Hornung’s resourceful solution not only highlights the lengths New Yorkers will go to for their pets but also showcases the creativity that thrives in the city that never sleeps. With her viral videos, she has proven that where there’s a will, there’s a way—even if it means carrying a 52-pound Samoyed in a backpack through the bustling streets of NYC.
